The National Association of Care & Support Workers (NACAS) is dedicated to supporting and representing care workers across the United Kingdom.

It's founder, Paul Featherstone, talks us through how NACAS came about, and how it has developed to support those working in care, today.

The Mission of NACAS

Whilst dealing with the challenges of being a carer, it became clear that there was little support out there to deal with the specific challenges that we faced. In 2015, with the help and support of my wife, I went about setting something up that would support carers in some way. At that time, we had no idea what NACAS would really look like as we had no model to follow.

We went about shaping something that addresses the unique needs of care workers, offering them a unified voice and a range of supportive services.

Today, our mission is clear. To drive change for Care Professionals.
NACAS aims to:

  • Advocate for Care Professionals: Representing care workers' interests at various levels of government and within the industry.

  • Provide Support and Resources: Offering practical resources, advice, and assistance to care workers.

  • Promote Professional Development: Encouraging continuous learning and professional growth through training and certification programs.

  • Enhance Recognition and Respect: Striving to elevate the status and recognition of care workers within society.

Key Services Offered by NACAS

NACAS offers a number of services, including:

1. Advocacy and Representation
NACAS plays a crucial role in lobbying for better working conditions, fair wages, and recognition of the essential work care workers perform. They engage with policymakers, participate in consultations, and ensure that the voices of care workers are heard in decisions affecting the care sector.

2. Training
Professional development is a cornerstone of NACAS's offerings. We provide access to various training courses designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of care workers. This not only helps individuals in their current roles but also opens opportunities for career advancement.

3. Support Services
Recognising the challenges Care Professionals face, NACAS offers a range of support services including:

  • Advice and Guidance: Practical and legal advice on employment rights, workplace issues, and career development.

  • Mental Health Support: Resources and support for mental health and well-being, acknowledging the emotional toll care work can take.

  • Peer Networks: Opportunities to connect with fellow care workers, share experiences, and build a supportive community.

4. Resource Library
NACAS provides a comprehensive library of resources, including best practice guides, policy updates, and research reports. These resources are invaluable for care workers looking to stay informed and deliver high-quality care.

The Impact of NACAS

NACAS has been instrumental in raising the profile of care work as a profession. By promoting standards of excellence and recognising outstanding care workers, NACAS helps to ensure that care work is valued and respected.

The training and resources provided by NACAS contribute directly to the quality of care that workers can offer. Well-trained and supported Care Professionals are better equipped to provide compassionate and effective care to those in need.

How to Get Involved

1. Membership
Joining NACAS is a straightforward way to access their resources and support. Membership offers numerous benefits, including discounts, training, and access to exclusive content.

2. Volunteering
Volunteering with NACAS is an excellent way to contribute to their mission. Whether it's through advocacy efforts, supporting training sessions, or helping with community outreach, volunteers play a crucial role in NACAS's success.

3. Supporting the Cause
For those not directly involved in care work, there are still many ways to support NACAS. Donations, partnerships, and spreading awareness about the importance of care work and NACAS's mission can all make a significant difference.

Conclusion

The National Association of Care & Support Workers (NACAS) is a beacon of support and advocacy in the care sector. By focusing on the well-being and professional development of Care Professionals, NACAS not only improves their lives but also enhances the quality of care provided across the country. If you're a carer or someone who values the vital work they do, consider engaging with NACAS to support their essential mission.

Paul Featherstone, founder of NACASPaul Featherstone became a carer after being made redundant aged 54. After quickly realising there was no support organisation for care workers, he founded NACAS in 2015, as a professional body that care workers could call their own. A place where they could feel respected, recognised and get support from their peers, as well as with their careers.
