Your daily care pulse check with eMAR Metrics

Written by Alex Connelly | Mar 26, 2026 9:21:36 AM

When it comes to medication, “good enough” isn’t an option. You need to know (not just guess!) how often medication is given accurately and, more importantly, the reasons why it isn’t.

At Nursebuddy, we’ve created eMAR (electronic medication administration record) metrics to give you that total peace of mind. It’s a quick pulse check on medication administration for your whole business, so you can now see the safety and accuracy of your care at a single glance. Let’s dig into how this simple tool can make a big difference to your day-to-day life as a homecare manager.

What is eMAR?

If you're new to the term, eMAR stands for Electronic Medication Administration Record. Essentially, it’s a digital version of the traditional paper MAR charts used to track when a person takes their medicine.

According to the Care Quality Commission (CQC), good digital records are all about getting the right information to the right people at exactly the right time. An eMAR system helps you do this by:

  • Keeping things clear - it provides a legible, accurate record of every dose given, missed, or declined.

  • Adding an extra layer of safety - with built-in alerts and prompts, it helps your team avoid common human errors like double-dosing or missing a visit.

  • Saving you time - it reduces the need for physical paperwork and manual audits, so you can focus on what matters most. 💚

Ultimately, using eMAR is a way to demonstrate that your organisation is committed to safe, high-quality, and transparent care.

How eMAR metrics can make a difference

Instead of digging through individual client records, Nursebuddy’s new eMAR metrics give you a bird’s eye view of your entire organisation in seconds.

Here is how this simple tool makes a big difference:

  • Organisation-wide oversight - get a high-level view of medication safety across your entire business.

  • Spot trends instantly - easily see if missed doses are creeping up so you can investigate the "why" before it becomes a problem.

  • Support your growth - as you take on new clients, these high-level insights help you maintain consistency and high standards without the extra stress.

What this looks like

We’ve kept it simple so you can get the information you need and get back to your day. Your eMAR metrics dashboard will provide totals over a selected time frame, or a view for individual clients, showing the number of doses that were:

  • Given - the total number of doses successfully administered to clients.

  • Missed - the total number of doses that were not administered.

  • Not Given - the total number of doses that were not given for documented, care-related reasons (e.g., client refusal).

  • Variance on the previous month's performance.
